November Auction Spotlight: African Tribal Art & Ethnographic Objects

November 20, 2025 by Johan MartensLeave a Comment Filed Under: Uncategorised

Jordaens N.V. (Mortsel, Antwerp) presents a refined selection of African tribal art in our upcoming sale. This group brings together ancestor figures, maternity figures, twin/paired sculptures, ritual masks, reliquary heads, shrine baskets, ceremonial staffs and finials, created in wood and metal with rich patina, scarification, beadwork and fiber coiffures. The collection reflects artistic traditions from West and Central Africa (attributed styles including Baule, Senufo, Dogon, Yoruba, Fang/Kota and neighboring regions).

Collection highlights

  • Carved figures: seated and standing guardians, ancestor and maternity figures, powerful paired/twin sculptures with attenuated proportions.
  • Masks & mask-faces: expressive visages with fiber/raffia headdresses and braided coiffures—ideal for wall display or stands.
  • Ritual / ceremonial objects: staffs and finials, shrine baskets with inserted figures, cast brass/bronze miniatures and amuletic forms.
  • Materials & surface: weathered hardwoods, kaolin/pigment traces, old repairs and deep ritual patina prized by collectors.

Why collectors care: these works combine sculptural power, cultural significance and interior impact, making them sought after by African art collectors, decorators, galleries and museums.
